Thursday, 10.25am - A DRIVER whose truck was destroyed by fire just minutes after he was alerted to smoke coming from his cab says he is lucky to be alive.
John Walker, from Barrow upon Humber, wants to trace a fellow truck driver who woke him as he was sleeping in his truck in Occupation Road, Great Gonerby, in the early hours of Tuesday.

The mystery driver, who was in a white DAF and trailer, was leaving Brake Bros depot at around 2am when he spotted smoke coming from John's cab and alerted him.

John was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and firefighters were called to the scene to extinguish the flames which took hold of the cab and the wood load.

They found the cause of the fire to be an electrical fault in the engine compartment.

John was too poorly to speak to the Journal, but Sue Turner, whose lorry driver husband was working with him that night, said: "We would very much like to thank this man for saving John's life.

"If it wasn't for him, he could have died. In our book, he's a hero.

"John is recovering but is obviously very shaken and thinking about what could have happened. He is a very lucky guy."

All John knows about the trucker who saved his life is that he was heading to Crawley.

Brake Bros couldn't tell the Journal who the driver was or who he was working for.
