Thursday, 1.30pm - A LAND Army girl received her badge from the Government last week in recognition of her effort during World War II.
Barbara Cummings, 83, of Keates Avenue, served on land across the south of the country in order to do her bit.
The Land Army girls served a vital purpose, filling many of the posts left my men of fighting age who were drafted to the front lines.
Barbara said: "I enjoyed being a Land Army girl. It really was great.
"It was hard work but you did a different job every day more or less so it was always interesting.
"You did feel like you were doing something for the war effort."
Barbara was living in London when she joined up. She was posted wherever she was needed- often more than 100 miles from her home in areas such as Wiltshire and Somerset.
Barbara, who moved to grantham in 1950, has a collection of memorabilia from her time working the land, including a miniature doll of a Land Army Girl which she made during her first week in service. The doll is full kitted out in the Land Army uniform, with green ties and jumpers and brown felt slouch hats.
Barbara served as a Land Army girl from June 1943 until May 1946.
The badge has been awarded to all Land Army girls in recognition of their work to provide food and timber during the war years.
Barbara said: "I was very pleased when the medal arrived. It came in a nice box with a certificate signed by the Prime Minister.
It makes you feel like you really did something."
